‘Day after Day’ – new Quintet album

day after day cover

Very pleased to announce the latest album by the Olie Brice Quintet!  ‘Day after Day’ will be released on the Babel label on Friday 16th June, and launched this on the 14th June with a gig at the Vortex, London.

Featuring Alex Bonney (cornet), Mike Fletcher (alto), George Crowley (tenor) and Jeff Williams (drums), this is a follow-up to ‘Immune to Clockwork’.  Playing original by me, including dedications to Nathaniel Mackey and Wadada Leo Smith, and one very old standard.

I will of course be selling CDs at gigs, starting with the launch gig on Wednesday.  You can pre-order, download or stream the album here – https://babel-label.bandcamp.com/album/day-after-day

And here’s some footage of us playing one of the tunes, a couple of days before the album was recorded:

I’d really pleased to announce the imminent release of a new album, duo with one of my very favourite pianists, Achim Kaufmann.  it’s taken us a little while, it was recorded live at the Vortex in December 2014, and is coming out now on the Babel label.  We’ll be launching it with a gig as part of the London Jazz Festival, at the Vortex on November 20th (a double bill with Camilla George) – available from me at gigs, or from the Babel website shortly…

We’ll be launching the album with a gig at the Vortex in London on Feb 3rd – not quite the same line-up as the album, Alex Bonney, Jeff Williams and me will be joined by two more of my favourite musicians, George Crowley on tenor and Mike Fletcher on C Melody sax

Some new CDs…

Realised I’ve a bit of a back-log of releases that I’m on but haven’t written about on here…

Nick Malcolm’s ‘Beyond These Voices’ is now out, featuring Alexander Hawkins, Mark Whitlam and me, plus Corey Mwamba guesting on three tracks.  You can hear and/or buy it here: http://greeneyesrecords.bandcamp.com/

We’ve already had quite a few nice reviews for ‘Beyond These Voices’, some of the internet ones can be found here:

Also just released is the second album by the Riverloam Trio – Mikolaj Trzaska, Mark Sanders and me.  Our first album came out on No Business a couple of years ago as a double LP, this time we’ve gone for a CD, which has been released on FMR.  You could get one from the usual places, or I’m bringing copies to gigs…  Only one review so far for that, the Downtown Music Gallery had this to say:

“By now, you should recognize the name of Polish reedsman, Mikolaj Trzaska, since he can be found on more than thirty releases working with Joe McPhee, Johannes Bauer, Peter Brotzmann and Ken Vandermark’s Resonance Ensemble. Trzaska also has a dozen discs as a leader. British bassist Olie Brice I know from a few discs on the FMR label as well as a trio with Ingrid Laubrock. UK drum master Mark Sanders certainly needs no introduction here since he is the in-demand drummer for Paul Dunmall, Evan Parker and Jah Wobble. This is a strong, spirited free trio with all three members integral to the intense, creative sound. Mr. Trzaska lets out some extreme blasts at times, bending his notes in a Brotzmann-like way yet his sound is definitely his own. There are moments when the trio lays back, the bassist does some haunting bowing while Trzaska plays quietly ominous bass clarinet. This is a formidable, inventive and spirited date. Ommmm. – Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG”

One more to tell you about, an improvised trio session by Mike Fletcher, Tymek Jozwiak and me has been released on Slam Productions, called ‘Nick Of Time’.  Don’t think it’s technically been released yet, but if you catch Mike on a gig physical copies do exist… Here’s what Slam have to say about it –

The on-going saga of my Quintet record is still unresolved… details here if and when it ever comes out!

Entropi kickstarter

The fantastic alto player Dee Byrne has launched a kickstarter campaign to raise funds for Entropi’s debut album.  Entropi is Dee’s quintet, a band i love playing in.  Here’s the video – if you think you might buy the album when it comes out anyway, please consider pre-buying it now!

Nick Malcolm Quartet – Beyond These Voices

The new album by the Nick Malcolm Quartet will be out very soon, on Nick’s label Green Eyes Records.  The album is called ‘Beyond Our Voices’, and features the same line-up as our earlier album – Alexander Hawkins on piano, Mark Whitlam on drums and me – plus a very special guest Corey Mwamba.  I love being in this band, Nick writes fantastic and original music and I’m really proud of the new recording.

Here’s a recent interview Nick did about the release, along with a bit of footage of a gig we did at the Vortex earlier this year.

We’ll be touring to promote the new album, with Ric Yarborough replacing Mark Whitlam on drums for this tour.  The first four dates will be with Corey Mwamba on vibes, the next five Alexander Hawkins on piano, and finally Alex Roth will be on guitar for the final gig of the tour.

The Catatumbo album is available to pre-order (ships early June, but you can get it before then by coming to our album launch…)  Recorded live at the Vortex during our November 2011 tour, it’s been released in a rather gorgeous package by Babel.  180g vinyl, gatefold sleeve with fantastic artwork by Jethro Brice (my brother) and a glass mastered CD thrown in, or alternatively downloadable in most formats, from here:

you can also buy the CD separately, but it seems not at that website, so you’ll to come to a gig or email me if that’s your preference…

We’ll be launching the album properly with a gig at the Vortex, on 21/05/12

BABs – Diving Bells

BABs is James Allsopp on bass clarinet, me, and Alex Bonney processing us in real time.  We’re launching the album on 20/01/12, at Cafe Oto.  That gig is also the album launch for Icarus’ new album, the most exciting new electronic music I’ve come across in years, do check it out… details here:

various bits of news…

Here’s updates on a few things:

  • The Catatumbo album due out on Babel has been rescheduled, now due out next March.  It’s quite a package, 180g gram vinyl, gatefold with gorgeous artwork by Jethro Brice,  and a CD thrown in for good measure. I think there’ll be an option of buying just a CD as well.
  • Been having a lot of fun playing in a new trio, BABs, with Alex Bonney on laptop and James Allsopp on bass clarinet.  We’ve just finished mixing and mastering our album, which will be released in January on mini-loop records, download only (initially at least).  Album launch / debut gig at Cafe Oto on Jan 20th, on a bill with DJ Inchtime and the astonishing Icarus, who are also launching their new album.  More information here
  • And finally, looking forward to touring in the new year with another new trio, Birchall / Brice / Marks.  Tour info on the Gigs page, we’ve also got a recording ready to go, will write something up here when we work out what we’re doing with it!
