‘Day after Day’ – new Quintet album

Very pleased to announce the latest album by the Olie Brice Quintet!  ‘Day after Day’ will be released on the Babel label on Friday 16th June, and launched this on the 14th June with a gig at the Vortex, London.

Featuring Alex Bonney (cornet), Mike Fletcher (alto), George Crowley (tenor) and Jeff Williams (drums), this is a follow-up to ‘Immune to Clockwork’.  Playing original by me, including dedications to Nathaniel Mackey and Wadada Leo Smith, and one very old standard.

London Jazz Festival Gigs 2016

I’ve got a bunch of fun things happening at the LJF this year…

On Monday 14th I’m at I’klectic, a lovely venue in Waterloo,  with Dee Byrne’s band Entropi, and also with a new project Dee and Cath Roberts have put together, a big band called the LUMEkestra

On Tuesday 15th I’m playing in a new trio with the wonderful cornet player Kirk Knuffke, who’s over from New York with Matt Wilson’s band.  We’ll be playing trio with Mark Sanders, an early set at the Vortex Downstairs (the bar below the  main venue), one set from 6pmish

On Thursday 17th at 2pm I’m part of a free event combining a talk by Professor Mark Smith (University of South Carolina) on Jazz and Everyday Aesthetics with a performance by the Mike Fletcher Trio (with me and Jeff Williams), taking place at the University of Westminster

And finally – an album launch!  I’m about to release a duo CD called ‘Of Tides’, with the amazing pianist Achim Kaufmann.  Recorded live at the Vortex in Dec 2014, it’s been a little while in the works but we’ll be launching it, back at the Vortex on Sunday 20th at 7.30pm (a double bill with the Camilla George Quartet)

Tony Malaby / Olie Brice / Jeff Williams

I’m really excited to be playing three gigs this May with two of my favourite musicians – Tony Malaby and Jeff Williams.

On the 13th we’ll be at the Vortex, in Dalston, London; on the 14th at Bello Bar in Dublin; and finally on the 15th we’re in Belfast, at the Black Box on Hill Street.

Tony is one of the most incredible saxophonists and improvisers around, I’ve been a huge fan for years.  Playing with Jeff is always a joy and privilege too – should be a fun tour!

Nick Malcolm Quartet – Beyond These Voices

The new album by the Nick Malcolm Quartet will be out very soon, on Nick’s label Green Eyes Records.  The album is called ‘Beyond Our Voices’, and features the same line-up as our earlier album – Alexander Hawkins on piano, Mark Whitlam on drums and me – plus a very special guest Corey Mwamba.  I love being in this band, Nick writes fantastic and original music and I’m really proud of the new recording.

Here’s a recent interview Nick did about the release, along with a bit of footage of a gig we did at the Vortex earlier this year.

We’ll be touring to promote the new album, with Ric Yarborough replacing Mark Whitlam on drums for this tour.  The first four dates will be with Corey Mwamba on vibes, the next five Alexander Hawkins on piano, and finally Alex Roth will be on guitar for the final gig of the tour.

Played Twice

Really looking forward to a short tour next week, with Dan Wood’s ‘Played Twice’.  This quintet focuses exclusively on the compositions of Thelonious Monk, and features some fantastic musicians – Dan on piano, George Crowley on tenor, Nick Malcolm  on trumpet and Simon Roth on drums.

We’ll be playing at St Ives Jazz Club on Tuesday 4th Feb,  The Queen’s Head in Monmouth on the 5th, and the Fringe in Bristol on the 6th.  Then back to London on the 7th, for our regular more-or-less monthly gig at Servant jazz Quarters.

Some of my favourite musicians to work with, and some of the greatest tunes ever written – should be fun!

Tobias Delius / Olie Brice / Mark Sanders – uk tour dates

I’m getting really excited about the tour I’ve got coming up with Tobias Delius, the fantastic tenor / clarinet player.  We did a trio gig recently (with Mark Sanders) at the very lovely ZomerJazzFietstour in Gronigen, playing in a lovely old church in what felt like the middle of nowhere, but somehow still to a packed house….  you can see it in the nice but small photo at the top of this blog entry.

Olie Brice Quartet – a couple of London gigs coming up

I’ve got two gigs coming up with the Olie Brice Quartet.  My Quartet usually features Mark Hanslip, Alex Bonney and Jeff Williams, but both gigs will be taking place when neither Jeff nor Mark are in town, so I’ve invited a couple of fantastic musicians to stand in for them – Tim Giles on drums and George Crowley on tenor and clarinet.  Really looking forward to hearing them play my tunes!

We’re playing at the Shaftesbury Tavern (534 Hornsey Rd, London) tomorrow – 25th June.  This is a fairly new night, 2 sets, only £5, 8.30pm start.  Then on the 18th of July we’re at an even newer night run by Dee Byrne and Cath Roberts, called ‘Lume’.  This is also two sets for £5 with an 8.30 start.  Information about the night can be found on their rather lovely looking new website – here.

Both gig will feature music from our newly recorded, yet to be released album…

Tobias Delius / Olie Brice / Mark Sanders – tour dates

I’m very excited about some gigs this summer/autumn with in a new trio with two of my favourite musicians – Toby Delius (reeds) and Mark Sanders (drums).  We’ll be doing the following dates:

31/08/13 – Groningen, Holland

19/09/13 – The Vortex, London

20/09/13 – Ort Cafe, Birmingham (actually it’ll be Miles Levin on drums for this one)

21/09/13 – St Margaret’s Church, Manchester (with special guest Dave Birchall)

22/09/13 – Bridge Hotel, Newcastle
